Port of Albany
Background
The Port of Albany is Upstate New York’s largest public port and logistics hub. It operates year-round with deep-water shipping access, 450 acres across four municipalities, and an on-site U.S. Customs and Border Protection office. The Port serves nearly two dozen tenants across agriculture, construction, and recycling, handling bulk commodities like grain and steel, as well as specialized heavy-lift and multimodal services—including for the global wind energy market.
Challenge
The Port needed a full website redesign and redevelopment. Their old WordPress site was outdated, insecure, and difficult to update. It failed to meet modern web standards, presented accessibility issues, and didn’t support key content like video or photography. As a public authority, the Port also needed to meet strict document reporting and compliance requirements, including maintaining an extensive public records library.
The new site needed to be secure, accessible (WCAG AA compliant), mobile-friendly, and built on a CMS that allowed the Port’s team to manage content with ease.

Solution
We started by auditing the existing site, identifying redundant documents and streamlining content to improve performance and usability. We designed and built the new site on Drupal 10, a secure, flexible CMS that supports high-quality media, complex content structures, and accessibility.

To ensure the site met modern accessibility standards, we developed a new visual design system. It preserved the Port’s brand identity while introducing a refreshed color palette tested for contrast compliance. We also created a detailed design guideline for future use and trained the Port’s communications team on-site for a smooth handoff.
Key upgrades included:
- An easy-to-update document library to meet compliance standards.
- An improved bid opportunities section to streamline procurement.
- A new interactive map highlighting tenants and Port features.
- Custom-shot drone video featured on the homepage to enhance visual storytelling.

The new site launched with top scores across the board on Google Lighthouse:
